ITC LAUNCHES NEW INSURANCE COURSES TO RESPOND TO MARKET DEMANDS

By. Kenneth Bukenya

The Insurance Training College (ITC) has taken a major step in advancing insurance education in Uganda with the launch of three new training programs aimed at addressing market needs and promoting professional development.

The courses – Insurance for Non-Insurance Professionals, Certificate in Insurance Broking, and the Certificate in Takaful Insurance, have been designed to respond to market demands.

While officiating at the launch at Kabira Country Club, Kampala on May 15, 2025, the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) Chief Executive Officer, Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega commended ITC for keeping tabs on the evolving trends, noting that continuous professional development is key for the sector growth.

He stressed the need for the sector to embrace change and forward-thinking approaches, particularly highlighting the urgent need to build actuarial expertise in the region, noting that discussions are already underway with the College to develop training programs in this critical area.

He encouraged both new entrants and seasoned professionals to take advantage of the courses offered by ITC to stay competitive and relevant.

The ITC Principal, Mr. Saul Sseremba said the launch reflects the College’s deliberate effort to align insurance education with industry demands, improve inclusivity, and extend reach across the region. He cited ongoing curriculum development initiatives, including partnerships with universities and integrating insurance education into Uganda’s secondary school curriculum through a training-of-trainers program for entrepreneurship teachers.

“Today marks a very significant milestone. We have come a long way from the institute that was coordinating programs from other countries to a college that has several programs that respond to the demands of the market,” he noted.

Mr. Sseremba also acknowledged the vital role of development partners, particularly the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in supporting the college’s inclusive training goals.

“UNDP has assured us they are going to support us in developing the actuarial capacity of the market,” he said

Highlighting ITC’s growing regional presence, Mr. Sseremba noted that the College’s programs are now available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mauritius, Burundi, South Sudan, and Rwanda, a testament to the institution’s expanding influence and the quality of its offerings.

“We want to reaffirm our mission of fostering capacity building and promoting insurance knowledge and awareness… We are your partners in professionalism, and we are here to support you along the way.”
