IRA CEO CALLS FOR TAILORED HEALTH INSURANCE POLICIES

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) Chief Executive Officer, Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega, has urged health insurance providers to maximize technology to innovate customer-tailored services.

Given the evolving customer needs, Alhaj Kaddunabbi who was speaking at AAR Health Services’ 40th anniversary celebration at Mestil Hotel, Kampala on October 31, 2024, said insurance solutions should transcend traditional methods and align with the ever-changing expectations of modern consumers.

“Today’s customers demand convenience, personalisation, and seamless digital experiences,” he remarked. He added “We, therefore, expect more tailored policies based on individual customer behaviors.”

Alhaj Kaddunabbi emphasised the need for the industry to push the boundaries of what is possible, embrace new technologies, and further personalize and enhance patient care.

His remarks underscored a shifting landscape, where insurtechs are increasingly driving improvements in customer engagement, product development, risk assessment, and claims management.

He highlighted that health insurance is among the fastest-growing segment in Uganda’s insurance market, with Health Membership Organization Gross Written Premiums rising by 47% from Ugx. 38.28 billion in 2022 to Ugx. 56.38 billion 2023.  Of this, Ugx. 40.937 billion was paid out in claims, reflecting a rise in both awareness and demand for health insurance.

He praised AAR’s legacy and leadership in the industry, urging the team to continue leading with innovation and customer-focused care as they enter the next 40 years.

The AAR Managing Director, Ms. Nassuna Christine said the company has over the last 40 years navigated challenges, embraced change, and seized opportunities leading to remarkable growth.

This journey, she said, includes digitization of services, launching new innovative solutions like customised insurance solutions, customised micro insurance products, expanded customer base and reinforced market presence.

AAR Health Services has broadened its distribution and service-provider networks to over 360 service providers within Uganda and across the East African region.
