The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA), together with its partners this week are marking and celebrating the Annual Insurance Week, 2025 (AIW).
Speaking during the official opening of the AIW at Millenium Park Lugogo, the IRA Chief Executive Officer, Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega urged industry players to institutionalize the initiative and extend the engagement across their branches to ensure that every policyholder, regardless of location, has access to these interactions.
The AIW runs from March 10-13th, 2025, under the theme: “Redefining Insurance: Trust, Innovation and Inclusivity.
Alhaj Kaddunabbi noted that the AIW provides a bridge between insurers and policyholders, allowing industry players to engage openly, honestly, and have productive conversations with the public.
It also offers an opportunity for players to demystify misconceptions, showcase the different insurance products, and get feedback from the public.
The AIW is organised in partnership with the Uganda Insurers Association (UIA), Insurance Training College (ITC), Insurance Brokers Association of Uganda (IBAU), Africa Reinsurance Corporation (Africa Re), Zep-Re, the Uganda Bankers Association (UBA), Financial Intelligence Authority, the Institute of Public Accounts of Uganda (ICPAU), Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), the National Social Security Fund, the Insurance Appeals Tribunal and Women in Insurance, Insurance Appeals Tribunal.
Alhaj Kaddunabbi commended partners, sponsors and exhibitors for coming in big numbers, saying it showed commitment of driving the insurance sector towards accessibility and inclusivity.
“To all our partners and sponsors, your dedication fuels the success of this event, every year. We are optimistic that we shall continue to walk this journey together until insurance becomes a top of the mind and household name across the country,” he said.
Several activities are being conducted during the week-long event including a band procession, sensitizing the public about the value of insurance, a medical camp where the public received free medical services including HIV and Hepatitis B screening and counselling, eye checkup, and Blood donation, among others.
Alhaj Kaddunabbi and the partners also handed over tents to Traffic Uganda Police Officers to protect them from the scorching sun and rain, in the course of duty. This was done under the joint industry Corporate Social Investment Program.
He noted that there has been an increase in the number of complaints registered, owing to enhanced public awareness about policyholders’ rights resulting from engagements like the annual insurance week.
The Principal Insurance Training College, Mr. Saul Sseremba applauded IRA for the consistency in organizing the AIW every year, saying that it has provided a platform for the industry to engage the public in the quest to push insurance awareness to the masses to deepen market penetration.
He also called for enhanced engagement of the young people to interest them in insurance so as to build a strong workforce in future that will help to further take insurance services to the masses.
The Life & Pensions Manager, Uganda Insurers Association Mr. Badru Bengo, alluded to the need to build trust, saying that it is critical for sector growth.
The IBAU Team Leader, Mr. Christopher Bakesiga Mugisha also alluded to the need to build trust given that the industry sells a promise.
“If you don’t honour the promise which you sell, you will not be trusted. We need to create an environment where the public believes in us in whatever we say and do,” he said.
