TOWARDS A CLEANER CITY: IRA DONATES GARBAGE SKIPS TO KCCA.

The Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda has donated garbage skips to Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to Nateete market in a bid to support responsible waste management efforts in Kampala.

The skips were handed over to KCCA’s Ag.Director Public Health and Environment, Dr. Sarah Zalwango by the IRA Chief Executive Officer, Alhaj Kaddunabbi Ibrahim Lubega on July 10, 2025, at Nateete market in Rubaga division.

Speaking at the handover event, Alhaj Kaddunabbi said the donation sought to support KCCA’s ongoing campaign on separation of garbage into organic and inorganic waste to improve waste management, especially in markets and also make waste useful.

He said well sorted organic waste can be used to generate electricity and fertilizers while inorganic waste can be recycled to produce other usable things.

“Previously, people have been mixing all different kinds of waste which makes it unusable, thus making markets dirty. With this donation, we want people to start separating organic from inorganic waste to make it easy for people who want to reuse it for different purposes,” he said.

He added: “We have graciously donated these skips and we shall do the same in other markets; this is the first of its kind and we do more because we believe that we have to give back to the population. This one way through which we touch the hearts of the ordinary Ugandans”.

The donation is part of IRA’s Corporate Social Investment and demonstrates IRA’s responsibility towards achieving a sustainable environment.

Grateful

Dr. Zalwango expressed gratitude to IRA for the kind gesture, saying the donation will boost its waste sorting efforts.

“We are in a campaign to see all Kampala residents and those working in Kampala start sorting waste in the two-bin system – the recyclables and the organic ones, she said, adding that sorting increases the value of waste, which will in turn reduce waste and result in a cleaner city.

“If you don’t sort waste, it becomes garbage. People who want to take organic waste will not take it if it is mixed with the inorganic. Even those who want to take inorganic will not take it if it is mixed with organic,” she said.

The Natete market chairman, Mr. Bonny Kabugo also applauded IRA for the donation and pledged to ensure that the market is kept clean at all times.

The Manager Corporate Affairs at IRA, Ms. Mariam Nalunkuuma rallied market vendors to buy insurance to safe guard themselves against unforeseen risks.

“You can insure against fire; you can have health insurance, education insurance for your children or agriculture for the farmers that bring produce in markets. A risk will not warn you when it is coming, but when it happens, let it find you when you have a fallback position,” she said. IRA also participated in the cleaning exercise of the market after handing over the skips.
