INSURERS TO OFFER MEDICAL INSURANCE COVER FOR COVID-19 PATIENTS

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) has been engaging all regulated medical insurance and reinsurance providers on the possibility of extending the existing medical insurance policies to cover cases of Covid-19 aware of the fact that majority of insurance policies exclude cover for pandemics due to their catastrophic nature.

To this end, the insurance players have unanimously agreed to support Government efforts in preventing the spread of Covid-19 by making an exemption to the standard policy terms & conditions (pandemic exclusion) and admitting valid claims for medical expenses for the treatment of insured patients infected with Covid-19.

IRA therefore informs the insuring public that the existing medical insurance policies will provide cover for Covid-19 which may include testing, treatment and care at the Government designated facilities. Medical insurance policyholders and other customers are therefore encouraged to seek further details and clarifications from their medical insurance providers. The IRA will continue to monitor the situation and give additional guidance where necessary.

We also encourage medical insurance customers to follow the guidelines provided by Government

The Ministry of Health and further advise persons who exhibit symptoms or suspect exposure to the corona virus to contact the Ministry of Health through the toll free lines 0800-100066 or 0800-203033 so that we can collectively defeat COVID-19.

Stay safe and healthy but also be insured!
